this 5 star read I wrote There is something in the cadencef Gerritsen s writing the atmosphere she has created that is reminiscent f Du Maurier s Rebecca This is delicious It sends tingles down my spine After finishing The Shape f Night and mulling it ver for a couple f days I would not change ne word f my commentThis is a delicious book set in a house Tiffany Girl of secrets in a town with secrets But Ava has secrets too And guilt A terrible crippling guilt that threatens to smother her and causes her to cut herselfff from those she loves mostGerritsen introduces a paranormal aspect to her book something she does not normally do and something I am not normally attracted by But this works and works superbly I almost fell in love with Captain Brodie myself There are also several sex scenes in the text not graphic but tastefully done with left to the imagination than not They are not gratuitous but a wonderful part One Cause, Many Ailments: The Leaky Gut Syndrome: What It Is and How It May Be Affecting Your Health of this storyThis is a real departure for Gerritsen butne I enthusiastically applaud and I would like to see in this vein from her Two comments and neither a criticismeach page should come with a bold reminder to KEEP BREATHING because many times during this read I found myself holding my breath with anticipation andor suspense And the secondI wish she had troubling rumors surrounding her new abode Before long it becomesbvious that the surrounding community is harboring a few very dark secrets and the ghosts Night's Pawn of Brodie s Watch may be the leastf her concerns I ve never read the popular and well respected Rizzoli and Isles series but I know enough about it to realize this stand alone book is not cut from the same cloth No Firing the First Elder (Pioneers in the Pulpit Book 2) offense to anyone but if you aren t a fanf Paranormal books r expect Rizzoli and Isles nly with different names and places then you ll want to approach this ne with f an The Secret Child open mind Just as you might not wish to readne author Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno: Tokyo Teen Fashion Subculture Handbook one seriesr ne genre I m sure authors like a change f pace from time to time as well As for me I love Gothic tones ghosts and cold case mysteries so this book was right up my alley The story is very atmospheric with a strong sinister sense f foreboding The emotions are also palpable as Ava s immense sadness and verwhelming guilt threatens to vercome her But all the paranormal instances center around a death that took place at Brodie s Watch years back which was ruled an accident This mystery is very compelling and I fear it might be a little vershadowed by the heavy emphasis placed Death by Inferior Design on the sensuality and ghostlyccurrences While this may be too much f a departure for some f Gerritsen s readers for those Hitler's Northern War: The Luftwaffe's Ill-Fated Campaign, 1940-1945 of us who like these typesf stories this is a welcome addition to her library f work Overall I really enjoyed this book and I hope Gerritsen will step utside her series writing ften to publish stand alone novels like this ne I love Tess Gerritsen s Rizzoli Isles series so was looking forward to read this especially when it sounded like a foray into a very different type A Philosophy of Cinematic Art of novel a gothic gothic paranormal characters were well developed and the setting was atmospheric but somehow I felt that none f the elements gothic paranormal mystery were as well realised as they could have been to pull this into a really creepy gothic mystery This story was just not what I was expecting I ve read Tess Gerritsen in the past and remembered her novels as thrilling This ghost story was far from it the pace was very slow and I just wanted to get to the end Unfortunately I do not recommend this In a World Created by a Drunken God one There is some light BDSM to be awaref Thanks to NetGalley for dead things escalate and Ava is drawn in to a nightmare that she isn t sure she can escape fromI did enjoy this book but I really think some f the scenes were unnecessary I found they detracted from the book and while yes it was creepy it could have been made so by the power f suggestion not the explicit scenarios that were repeated This would make a good beach read but it could have been so much My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review EXCERPT Even now I still dream about Brodie s Watch and the nightmare is always the same I am standing in the crashing against the cliffs and verhead seagulls scream a warning to stay far far away I know that Death waits behind that front door yet I do not retreat because the house is calling to me Perhaps it A strong story but it was as though Gerritsen could not help returning to this silly theme that really sullied the story for those who have enjoyed her thrillers in the past The story could have been great as it had all the needed ingredients but it flopped n a few ccasions and left me wondering why she might want to go in these directions All the power to those who want to read his pulsing member novels but when you add his pulsing apparition member you lose even level headed readers Not all is lost but some readers like me may not be able to simply ignore itKudos Madam Gerritsen for the attempt but let s stick to Boston s crime scene and Rizzoli Isles if you pleaseLovehate the review An ever growing collection Annual Report of the Officers of the Town of Holderness, N.
